To Witness Salt Dry [Ang Saksi sa Binuwad na Asin] meditates on a community of informal settlers living on reclaimed land on the edge of Cebu City. The transformation from ocean to land has forever altered the lives of these people; the wave of change beckons again as the urban expands into the rural. A sense of being either host or guest to the land is in constant flux. This is a documentary made by young people approaching film making for the first time, an act of sharing what is their home and the intimate stories of family members and neighbours.

Crane is an American fine art photographer from the coast of Maine who grew up in the snows of the Wasatch mountains. Raised in a photographic household and exposed to emulsion at an early age, photography has taken him around the world and back again. He recently moved to Cheung Chau to share his passion for vintage alternative processes with the good people of Hong Kong. Crane’s work explores the digital age through an antique lens and seeks to reinterpret the relationships of people to their environments. He only speaks one language but practices art as a photographer, printmaker, illustrator, writer, and sculptor. His photographs have been exhibited in shows across the United States and Europe. Lighthouse
Attempting to document the stretched capacity of life, Lighthouse explores dialogues that one can have with oneself in a seemingly daily setting at a private home, and celebrates life and death. 

The work is a tribute to Francesca Woodman and a dear friend Chin Tangerine.
 

《Lighthouse》嘗試記錄生命之延展能力,探索個體在看似日常的家居裡所產生的內在對話,並擁抱生命與死亡。

Currently based in Hong Kong / Australia, Stella is a performance maker / performer / curator / producer / translator who is interested in breaking boundaries in art via various roles. Her recent works include Lighthouse, (Choosing) Pornography, Please Mind the Gap; she was also one of the curators of Guest Host Ghost and Sea My Movie.

Cheng Shing 鄭勝

鄭勝 (b.1959) 生於香港。在長洲長大,自小隨父母捕漁,年紀大才小學畢業,1979年開始出市區工作。先後做過工人,木匠學徒。至八十年代初才對藝術發生興趣,開始學繪畫及雕塑。其用來創作的木雕材料全是由路邊與樹林搭取。鄭氏曾在長洲藝廊及華威酒店舉辦個展。作品為人收藏。

Cheng Shing (b.1959) was born in Hong Kong. He grew up in Cheung Chau. He was a fisherman and he graduated from primary school when he's old. He was working in town since 1979, he worked as a builder and also woodwork apprentice. He started to be interested in arts since 1980s, he studied drawing and sculpture. The materials he used for his work were all picked up from the streets and the woods. He has been exhibited in Cheung Chau Arts Gallery and also Warwick Hotel. His works were being collected by others.

我認為我在這個新自由主義社會中,只是一個微小又不顯眼的存在,沒有多少價值又不被尊重,我或普羅大眾,都並不接近主流。有一天,我看見一個黑色的塑膠袋在路上翻滾,看似一個用完後被丟棄的垃圾袋。

我覺得它跟我或我們有類同之處 — 用完後被丢棄。這是一個很好的藝術素材去形容我們的狀態。我曾經在2015香港藝術巴塞爾、街市、遊客區等地方,用大型塑膠袋演出,主要是兩個基本概念:一是不被注目的存在,而另一種是奇怪又不受歡迎的存在。

就像在錦上路港鐵站我的"垃圾袋計劃"中, 沒有被人注意到的飛舞垃圾袋。

另一個演出則在2015香港巴塞爾中那個不受歡迎的人物。從中我看到在如此知名的藝術博覽會與香港現實生活的巨大差距。

I consider myself as just a tiny and invisible being in this neoliberalism society. With less value and no respect, I or regular people are far from the mainstream. One day, I found one black plastic bag on the street that was rolling around. It looked like just a garbage bag that had been abandoned after its use.

I thought it was similar to me, also similar to us in this point, disposed after the usage. It was a good art material to describe this kind of circumstance. I had done several performances with big plastic bags in HK2015 Art Basel HK, some markets, tourism spots and etc. There were two basic concepts. One is an unrecognizable being and the other one is a strange and unwelcome being. 

For example, no one recognized the existence of the wriggly dancing garbage bag in a market such as my Garbage Bag Project in Kam Sheung Rd. MRT station.

The other performance in 2015 at Art Basel HK was about the person who is not welcomed. I could see the big contrast between the most well-known art fair and real life in HK.

Family slides from a flea market in Cornwall depicting a couples holiday from long ago, show beautiful landscapes, rocks, and echo a sense of curiosity and love for nature. Combined with my own x-rays from medical examinations, their contrast is apparent and yet they connect in the plastic material of the x-rays, slides and transparencies - a material that feels highly processed and the content is deeply personal, testaments of memories and anatomy.

The little table and shelf installation also has small rolled up scrolls for people to take away. Printed inside is a poem, A Soul Mate Premise, by Russ Ligtas, words that speak of the familiar, the most intimate details one knows only about a few people. This poem asks questions, uncertainty sits next to the factual nature of x-rays and photographs that document a moment.

The idea is for the human to be present and absent and the mundane glorified by lit candles reminiscent of an altar. The X-rays act as candle holders, and an existing one is decorated so as to bring out the content of the images like stained glass windows.

I simple and very low-fi experiment, a work-in-progress in combining 3 things that are deeply personal, from 3 separate sources, in 3 separate forms, with 3 separate purposes and from 3 separate countries.

CCWave Team Introduction No.6 : Les Fleurs du Mal (Fleurs): the first Gothic violinist in Hong Kong; a countertenor with soprano range. He engages in different events and organisations where he demonstrates his passion towards music. He has been the guest performer for Barclay moon trekkers for 4 consecutive years and the male soprano in the LGBT community choir "The Harmonics" for 3 seasons. He enjoys busking on the streets of Hong Kong and even Dublin. It is Fleurs' belief that classical music can be enjoyed and shared outside concert halls and palaces.
Fleurs wishes to share his love for Bach and Opera at Cheung Chau Wave, a night for everyone to remember, a place where the east and west collide.

Les Fleurs du Mal(下稱Fleurs)是香港首位歌德搖滾系小提琴手,擁有女高音音域的假聲男高音。他在香港積極參與不同的活動和組織,充分地表現他對音樂的熱衷。

Haunted places: Bella Vista on Cheung Chau and Aokigahara Forest on Mount Fuji  

 (28 November 2000) by Gérard Henry(Hong Kong Chronicles. This piece was presented as a sound installation for Guest Host Ghost 2015)                        

In this world there are strange places. Places that can cause in humans a morbid fascination, and which can even be said to have a fatal attraction, as they are marked with the seal of death. No doubt such places can be encountered in many countries, but one must live within the local community to hear about them – and then often only in veiled terms, because this is a subject that is approached reluctantly.

On Cheung Chau, a small island with a fishing port full of old world charm which is part of the territory of Hong Kong, Bella Vista villas is one of those resorts where city dwellers rent accommodation over the weekend with friends or lovers. Spanish style villas, overlooking a beach, they were once buzzing with life. In the old days, that is. Because today their lights are almost all turned off, and after dark, diving into silence, they are rather sinister. The reason is that they have been given by the media an unenviable name: “Hong Kong’s capital of suicide”. They have in recent years been the place of illegal confinement, of one or two crimes and particularly of several suicides whose stories have made the front pages of the tabloids. And since those dramatic events, quite strangely, the Bella Vista villas seems to mysteriously attract those who have decided to end their days.

At the entrance to the villa complex is a small tablet with a Buddhist image of the God of the Underworld - to pacify the troubled souls, and thus encourage them to let the living alone in peace. The belief in spirits and ghosts is deeply rooted throughout Asia: people who have committed suicide or died a violent death are said to come back to haunt the living, who avoid them like the plague. One of the first suicides that took place at the Bella Vista in 1989 was indeed that of a young woman who led in death her young child. She was discovered wearing a red cheongsam, the traditional Chinese dress. But the red color is the ultimate act of vengeance for those who have been victims of abuse in their lives and have been denied justice. It indicates that your ghost will come alive to harass your persecutors until the end of their days, without any possibility of prevention. 

In this place, suicides all employ a similar method: asphyxiation using the charcoal which is employed for barbecues. This is a new trend in Hong Kong where the majority of desperate people have tended rather to jump into the void from the top of skyscrapers. The Hong Kong psychologists see it as a result of the cover given to these events by the media: "When a person thinks of ending his days [said one of them], he will choose the first method that comes to his mind ". The owners of these villas are very angry. They have tried to put their properties up for auction, but even at half price, no one would dare to venture into such a transaction.

But if the "Bella Vista" phenomenon remains of very modest proportions in Hong Kong, in other places in Asia it has reached national prominence. The most fascinating case is that of the famous forest of Aokigahara in Japan. It is called "the sea of okigahara trees”.  This is a huge and very deep primeval forest which is found at the foot of Mount Fuji, the sacred mountain of Japan - an old forest where in the 19th century (it has been claimed) people struck by poverty would abandon their elders. Today it is just as famous, as dozens of people enter under this canopy of trees,  never to come back. They arrive from all over Japan, attracted by the deep forest which every season silently devours its share of desperate people. The phenomenon is such that since the 1970s, the police organize every year in October, before the snow covers the soil, a harvesting of corpses to recover those that have escaped their daily monitoring. The annual gruesome harvest was only fifty in 1994, but reached 70 corpses in 1999, an increase attributed to the Japanese economic crisis. The village people in the vicinity are exasperated; they do not dare go to the forest with their children for fear of encountering, when rounding a tree, a hanged person. The police have pinned little notes on the trees: "your life is a precious gift from your parents, do not keep your concerns to yourself, ask for advice”. They constantly patrol the forest, trying to dissuade strange walkers they meet. This year Buddhist monks have built a sanctuary to try to appease the spirits of the dead who haunt the forest, saying that they cast their devil nets to catch the living. 

Aokigahara forest is definitely a very strange place.

Living in Hong Kong since 1981, Gerard Henry is the chief-editor of the bilingual (French and Chinese) cultural magazine Paroles and also Deputy Director of Alliance Francaise de Hong Kong. He was a member of the team at the origin of The French May Festival in Hong Kong.

He has written on China, Hong Kong art and culture and on French visual arts for different exhibition programs and magazines including "China perspectives", "Le Monde diplomatique", and the philosophical and literary review “La Soeur de l’Ange”.

Since 1997, he has been the Hong Kong and China correspondent and cultural columnist for Radio Suisse Romande La Premiere in Switzerland and in 2008, he published a book called "Chroniques hongkongaises" at Editions Zoe, Geneva.

 He is also co-author of Foodscape (Editions MCCM, Hong Kong, 2009), and POST NO BILL (Story of The King of Kowloon). He was awarded "Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres" in 1999 by the French Minister of Culture for promoting Cultural exchanges between Chinese and French Communities.

He is currently President of the Hong Kong section of AICA ( International Art critics Association, an NGO with official relations with Unesco)). Academic adviser for Asia Art Archive (AAA), Representative in Hong Kong and member of the Internationa;l Board of The International Union of Francophone Press (UPF).

Poetry has been a spontaneous phenomenon in my life starting in my 30’s, in fact all forms of creativity that I have manifested have come as an unintended and surprising  source, I have to call it intuition, the poetry has been a looking glass, a life story psychological explanation, spiritual, wisdom and relationship. Woodwork from the love of the beauty of found wood and photography love of people.  Three things I truly intended to do (Ah yes I want to do this), one was typing, two bread making and my latest is piano, piano after the struggle for dexterity is wholly intuitive.

從十二歲開始,我便用簡單的底片相機拍攝家人及朋友。但當我第一次擁有一部數碼相機那天,我決定要整夜跟它造愛:在我房子裡不同的角落,拍攝我感性的裸體。我想知道如何成為出色的攝影師,然後我發現,要捕捉好的鏡頭,我必須要跟我拍攝的對象墮入愛河,即使只一個短暫的關係。

I had been taking photos since I was 12 years old using a very simple film camera photographing family and friends. However, the day i got my first digital camera, i decided that i would make love to my camera all night by taking sensual nude self portraits of myself all around my house. I wanted to learn what it meant to be a good photographer and discovered that for me to capture great photos I'd have to fall in love with the subject even if it meant being a short term relationship.

Ghost-like is something only apparently distant. You can't see its origin, but you can feel it everyday. That happens also in chemistry.

Here it is, then, a material world, commonly known, conceived using the complex and essential language of the molecular orbital theory, consumer goods created through the invention of all mathematical samples of atoms and substances, colours and shades of the matter that we can link to electron transitions among precise energy levels.
In music as well, something invisible from subconscious becomes a song, then energy and electrical current that move speakers.

Here it is, then, an electro music piece becomes its own language made from rock guitars, flutes, jazz elements, choirs, timpani, blues roots, harpsichords, songwriters, remixes, violins, David Sylvian, soul phrasings.
The video comes from the connection microscopic/macroscopic worlds: the macroscopic world using concepts developed in a microscopic environment.
LCAO (Linear Combination of Atomic Orbitals) is loosely inspired by the writer Primo Levi and, above all, by his work “The Periodic Table”.

LCAO is a solo music project, Berlin based. Here, the digital creation shapes itself through the pure concept of language, the conscious choice of a synthesis directed to create personal visions and theories about the composer’s experiences, not unlike a scientist, explaining Nature functions through universally recognized formulas, based on both his own and other people’s experiments.

鬼魅,顯然是一種遙遠的東西:你見不了其真身,你卻能每天感受它的存在。

跟化學一樣。

就是如此,一個大眾認同的物質世界:以分子軌道理論的複雜和主流語言建構出來,透過發明數學樣本的原子和物質製造出消費品,事物的顏色與光影,可以聯結到精確能源級別中的電子交易。

音樂亦然:潛意識中那看不見的東西成就了樂曲,能量和電流繼而啟動了揚聲器。

如是者,一首電子樂曲擁有了它自身的語調:結合了搖滾結他、長笛、爵士原素、合唱、定音鼓、藍調、古鍵琴、作曲家、混音、小提琴、David Sylvian、騷靈樂句。

錄像來自於微觀與宏觀世界的連結:以微觀環境發展出的概念建成的宏觀世界。

LCAO(原子軌道線性組合)在某程度上是受到猶太裔作家普理莫萊維的《周期表》所啟發。

Influenced by Berlin street-art and environmentalism, German-born artist liina klauss makes art from waste she finds on Hong Kong’s beaches. Retrieving what others have discarded she creates value from worthlessness and beauty from ugliness. liina motivates volunteers of all ages and backgrounds to help realize her huge visions. “The process of making art is equally important as the outcome – if not more important!” she says.

LCC is an organization that concerns about the community, environment and cultural conservation of Cheung Chau. Its set up is due to the build of an incinerator on the Shek Kwu Chau. 3% of the population of Hong Kong are foreign domestic workers, this number being about 300,000, the overwhelming majority of which are women from the Philippines and Indonesia. The complexity of migration in this film is set against the aesthetics of massive infrastructural expansion, in this case the Hong Kong-Macau-Zhuhai Bridge project, which is set for completion in 2019.

The Dark is like the impacts of thoughts and inspirations generated by the complexity and infinite possibilities that accompany the dark unconscious. They exist also in the deepest layer of our brain, and persistently influence my actions. At the same time, interactions of external behaviour are being absorbed consciously and unconsciously. Based on this understanding, the Dark is the synonym of cause-and-effect.

Biography:
If asked to categorize my works, conceptual, abstract and documentary (street photography) may come up. However to me there is always a certain confusion or ambivalence regarding these seemingly easy definitions. As I do not intentionally create works by category, these distinctions and definitions conferred to the works, and for that matter our knowledge of things, is only limits of the imagination.

孩提時的校園生活,總帶有幾分油燃自內心、無以名狀,但又本能的恐懼。它們源自傳說故事、家長教誨、或真實經歴過師長的責罰、或只是聽過的口頭威嚇,甚至是來自某些文化、符號,混雜於特定或非特定空間、幽暗或幽閉感、聲音、看見某物品,等等…從感官帶來的投射,和個人或集體的想像。

此空間可能讓你會想起廁所鬼故,可能讓你會聽到乜仙物仙,可能讓你會覺得被困黑房,可能讓你會回憶曾被罰抄,可能…。可視與不可視,存在與不存在,都可能。

它可以是種集體回憶,可以是種個人想像或經歴,可以…。是神話、是隱喻、是相遇、是經驗,都可以。

本作品來自長洲漁會公學的自成環境、就地取材的和藝術家自帶來的物料,還有來自策展的鬼魅與異迴概念、藝術家對恐懼與文化的探討。

Mixed Media Art (Sound, Installation, Site-specific Art)

Reminiscing the school life in childhood, we have been through the instinctive fear, myths, words from parents, or we have actually grown up in all kinds of punishment or just verbal abuse. When the above combined with culture, a designated culture, signs, and senses received in a designated or non-designated space, darkness, claustration, sound, some objects… human beings bringing with projections and imagination, individually or collectively. 

You may think of ghost stories of bathroom. You may hear about devils and spirits. You may feel like in the dark, feel like being locked in the dark. You may be punished. You may… It can be tangible or intangible, existing or non-existing. 

It can be a collective memory, a personal experience, or an imagination. It can also be a myth, a metaphor, or an encounter. 

The artwork was created by using the site of CC Fisheries Joint Association Public School. Adding materials into the room, the artist also makes use of those existing elements at the site in order to exhibit the curatorial concept of ghost and supernatural, and to display the artist’s investigation into the relationship between fear and culture.

 

嚴穎嘉

香港跨媒介藝術家、獨立策展人、藝術教育者,主要從事行為藝術、裝置藝術、場域特定藝術、公共藝術、社區及社群藝術。亦是電影美術及造型指導、舞台設計師、作者、社會行動者。

嚴穎嘉1984年生於香港,香港中文大學主修文化及宗教研究,雙副修藝術、新聞與傳播,2006年於天星皇后碼頭保育運動中創作而開始從事藝術,2008年獲香港藝術展發局邀約於上海街視藝空間舉辦首個個人展覽「因藝術之名」。至今近十年,嚴氏已策劃或獲邀參與,過百項本地或海外,本土或國際性的行為藝術、視覺藝術、跨媒介藝術展覽、計劃、駐村等,當中包括於香港、中國九個城市、台灣三個城市、歐洲五個國家共九個城市。

歷年她亦常於不同大學、學校及公私營機構教學及辦講座。對象由成人、大學生、青少年、小童、到不同國籍的及特殊需要的社群,並經常與不同藝術家、藝術團體、機構、院校、政府或非政府組織、民間團體等合作、策劃或接受委約項目。

Monique Yim Biography

Born in 1984, Hong Kong, Monique Yim is an interdisciplinary artist, art educator and independent curator, mainly works on performance, installation, site-specific, community and public art. She is also a film art director, theatre art designer, writer and a social activist. 

Since 2006, after studied in the Chinese University in Hong Kong, majoring in Cultural and Religious studies with double minors in Fine Art, and Journalism and Communication, Yim has started working as an independent artist. In 2008, she was committed by Hong Kong Arts Development Council to have her first solo exhibition “In the Name of Art” at Shanghai Street Art Space. In the decade, she has curated or participated in over a hundred of local or overseas performance art, visual art, cross media art exhibitions, projects or artist in residence programmes, including in Hong Kong, 9 cities in China, 3 cities in Taiwan, 5 countries with 9 cities in Europe.

During the years, Yim has been actively participating in art education hosted by different universities, schools, institutions and organizations, ranging from kids, teenagers, adults to different races and disabled or special need people. She has also collaborated with different artists, art organizations, and has always been commissioned by institutions and social communities.

Every time I press the camera shutter I feels death. It is death which reminds me to live well. This installation combines with the stairwell, the lights and more than 50 images selected from the body of work “memento vivere”.

每當我按下照相機的快門,意識到死亡。就是死亡不斷提醒我要好好生活。這個裝置是由樓梯、燈光及超過從 ”memento vivere” 系列選出來的50張照片組合而成。

Gary Ng is an independent photographer based in Hong Kong. He had an apprenticeship with Ben Lifson and Paola Ferrario. His works has been exhibited in Three Shadows Photography Arts Centre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Black Box Gallery, Kiernan Gallery & F-stop Magazine. Also, he has recent works includes “memento vivere”, "a trilogy: faith, hope, love", "so strange, so familiar".

artist statement:

 

To look life in the face, always, to look life in the face, and to know it for what it is...at last, to love it for what it is, and then, to put it away..." Virginia Woolf

Life is short. For some, life is miserable. Virginia's death reminds me to live well. Memento vivere is a project in which I record significant moments before they slip away. The intimate moments with my wife, the humors in the world, the introspective time I spend alone… the important activities for which I make time.

I keep photographing my everyday life, when I’m dinning, taking a shower, listening to music, commuting back home… Sometimes, I would make short trips and photograph trying to take from the visible world images that mirror my feelings and state of mind. When looking back at the moments, I sequence and finish the work through my intuition.

I imagine one day, when looking back at the pictures, I’ll say, “That was the year. That is my love. That is me.”

An abandoned hospital, once a shelter for the sick and homeless, now lies in ruin, its decrepit structure a home to the ghosts who roam this area of Cheung Chau. 
However, they are not the only guests whom have settled in since the boats sailed out a hundred years ago. 
The spirit tree hosts a parasite, gradually growing bigger, wrapping itself around its branches and trunk, growing until it is strangled to death. 
On and on the cycle goes, the guest becomes the host, the host becomes the ghost, the ghost becomes the guest…

Philippine Vidart is a French artist whose artistic practice varies from traditional mediums such as drawing and painting to graphic and architectural design.

Anagnorisis (darkroom prints)

Most of life’s significant transformations take us unaware. Imperceptible changes within our bodies and minds turn us into people we may never have expected to become. Anagnorisis is the moment we become aware of these changes and receive sudden insight into their meaning. Twenty-five years ago I was born, and I never realized I looked much like my father until now. Slowly but surely, the ghosts of his past become the hosts of my future; I am but a guest who must choose to accept the invitation.

Gather (driftwood, found objects)

Sometimes, many lines intersect at the same point. Each one of these driftwood pieces traveled tens, hundreds, or thousands of miles on different paths to gather upon the same stretch of sand below my house. They are guests here, and will eventually continue their liquid journeys to be hosted on other shores.

羅夏墨跡測試的發明,是用以量度精神層面的暗湧 - 一個從兔子洞穴的進口開始而又善變的尋寶線索。隨著時間的推移,我們對這測試的合法性開始質疑,就如我們對自我意識與身份的可能性及理解提出疑問一般。透過這些不完善的心理測試過濾後的揭示,根據這些墨跡去解讀,容許我們去見證自我作為那已成過去的"鬼魂"的"主人",和那個不可預知的未來的"客人"。

Rorschach inkblot tests were created to measure the undercurrents of our psyche - clues on a mercurial scavenger hunt that begins at the entrance of a rabbit hole. Over time, we began to question the validity of such tests, just as we questioned the possibility of understanding our own consciousness and identity. Revealed through the filter of these imperfect psychological tests, our interpretations of the inkblots allow us to witness ourselves as hosts to the ghosts of our past and the guests of our future.

"More than 10 years ago, in a funeral of the mother of one of my teacher, I heard a chanting that calmed every attendant’s heart. Since that night, I have been chanting the Heart Sutra over and over again. That’s how this piece grew into its shape today. Over the years, I have just openly shared it for 3 times. But the Mantra has been accompanying me through many times of life and death, and thousands of disturbance. Every time I chant it, it was like a cleansing of mind and body. This is no more about any religion but to deal with the simple existence of here and there."

我的身高、手長、步寬;在長洲的地域行走時,這種種的延伸與行進,都自然地反映在我的繪圖、畫作和攝影中。
無論是我的身體、以及身體與地域之間,都在探索著天、地、人的關係。

這房間裡的作品,在一個“時間”的支架裡,呈現出我在這議題上多方面的處理態度。

My paintings and most my processes in making art have been a journey about the relationship between the land and the body.
My height,arm span and pace. So while walking within the frame of the Cheung Chau countryside the is a continuance and juxtaposition which is reflected in the way I work in drawings, paintings and photographs.
Between my body and the body of the landscape it explores the relationship between Heaven Earth and Man.

The paintings and fragments in this room are in a body of Time which shows the different ways I have approached the issue.

I admit it with confusion
there are moments, quite uncanny

On the other side of glass

Yeung Cheung Ming 楊長明

I went to interview Mr. Yeung who runs a small household goods store in Sun Hing back street.  Like so many people in Cheung Chau what is seen from the front disguises the riches we find when we start to enquire deeper. “I am an ordinary man nothing special.  I can draw, no big deal, just others found it surprising that a shopkeeper can draw.”  His background reveals Cheung Chau when it was a manufacturing base when his father set up a pottery painting studio to which there were a few around at that time.  Originally the Yeung family was from the Chu Chow city of Guangdong Province and moved first to Shau Kei Wan and then to this island.  As a small boy he developed his interest in drawing and because of his father’s occupation he focused on the Gon Bi style of Chinese brush drawing.  Mr. Yeung has now been practising brush drawing for about 40 years and his interest is from the traditions of the Gon Bi artisan style to which bears a strong relation to the practice of porcelain painting.  However, back in the past he became more absorbed by the practice of Chinese painting but was confronted by one of the issues of Chinese painting which is you either go big or small.  He felt very humble about the subject of Chinese painting, so he focused on the small. 

He applies himself to painting from 9 to 11 pm everyday, his range of subjects are from figure and portraiture to landscape and horses and even micro brush drawings of ants, flies and mosquitoes.  Of his larger scrolls in which he can spend three months in completing the work paying attention to every detail.  Apart from brush drawing, Mr. Yeung in the last two years has developed his interest towards calligraphy which he said that in the beginning one starts with four-inch characters but then you either go bigger or smaller, because of his preference he went smaller so from three by three grid to nine characters.  Now he can write twenty-five characters within the grid. This called micro calligraphy. 

Mr. Yeung holds a humble attitude towards the arts.  He said “Many people are boastful, but when you step out of your door, you will find that 50% of the people are greater than you.  And when you walk down the street, you will find 80% greater than you.  Till you walk to the market, you may find that you are the remaining 10%.”

楊先生

「我很普通,沒什麼了不起! 」這是我邀請他接受對象的第一句回應。「我是會畫畫,沒什麼了不起,只是其他人看見一個雜貨店主也會畫畫而感到驚訝吧!」

楊先生什麼也會畫,他爸爸是個潮州人,從事陶繪畫工作。他就是兩年前剛開始研習書法。他指學書法一般由四寸字開始,然後越寫越大,或越寫越小。他選擇了後者。起初一個九宮格 (半寸),他可以寫一個格寫四個,然後再變九個,如今他可以寫出二十五個。他指這藝術就是微書。

沒有任何老師,今天的藝術都是他就是自己邊看書,邊練習得來。畫筆都是從前留下來的,現在香港已不能買到。

「很多人都很自大,但其實只要踏出自己的門口,你會發現有50% 比你強,再走過這條街,比你強的人可能已有80%,再走到街巿,你可能就是餘下的 10% (其他90%的人都比你強!)」這就是謙卑的藝術。

Yoshino Takahiko

Mr yoshino takahiko is a scientist as well as an artist. He is living in Cheung Chau for more than 20 years. He used to taught in Zhongshan university. He started drawing when he was a kid. He loves to use drawing as a means of relaxation. He would document the places he traveled with his drawing. He owned a shop in Cheung Chau with his wife, serving good red bean cakes.

Yoshino takahiko 既是科學家也是藝術家。他在長洲居住超過二十年。他曾在中山大學任教。他自少便學習繪畫,並喜歡紀錄旅遊風景,以及以繪畫來減壓。他跟太太在長洲有間店舖,賣的紅豆餅特別著名。
